How SpraySafe Works
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

Combines with and destroys cell membranes of organic compounds
(e.g. staph, E.coli, fungus, yeast)

Hypo = “Low” in chemical terms

Chlorous = “Relating to or obtained from chlorine”

Acid = A pH value below 7

Water = Good old H2O

In the process of killing bacteria and virus's, HOCl first attacks the shell of the pathogen, as the HOCl molecule is small and has no charge, it can pass through the cell wall to penetrate into the bacteria body. The proteins, nucleic acids & enzymes undergo oxidation reactions, which destroy the enzyme system of the bacteria and hinder its metabolism, thereby killing pathogenic microorganisms.
HOCl solutions are effective due to this unique ability to penetrate and oxidise harmful microorganisms. Compared to other chlorine-based disinfectants, which require higher PPM levels to achieve cell destruction. Spraysafe's HOCl chemistry is safer and environmentally friendly however, has previously been difficult to stabilise for everyday use. Now we have the technology to utilise HOCl's bacteria frighting and remove risks of irritation or environmental harm.
Mechanism of Action

-
Chlorine (Cl) on its own will not kill bacteria
-
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is the killing agent
-
The manufacture of HOCl requires a sophisticated oxidation process that turns water into a weak acid
-
It is the combination of HOCl and oxygen and that gives the ability to kill 99.99% of germs
Hypochlorous Acid Water make up is a stable, pure form with a neutral or slightly acidic pH allowing it to be non toxic, gentle and targeted.

Mechanism Matters:
Alcohol kills germs primarily by dehydrating them. It is effective against bacteria and viruses that have a lipid shell.
Sodium Hypochlorite solution (bleach)
active disinfecting agent is HOCl, also relying on oxidisation. But the solution is broad therefore remains strongly alkaline (high pH ~11-13) due to NaOH.
Stability & Concentration

HOCl is a naturally occuring substance and unlike other disinfectants or sterilisers it is non toxic.
SpraySafe's Hypochlorous Acid Water products use the same sterilisation principle as white blood cells and can instantly kill bacteria.

Due to Spraysafe's mild acid state with a pH value between, 5 and 6.5. And the chlorine concentration of our Hypochlorous Acid Water, it is effective from a very low parts per million concentration, 10-30ppm.
The product does not require high PPM. Products that do are not producing a stable solution. A stable solution requires precise chemistry & technology. Stability is affected overtime & through changes in temperature (travel). Therefore a local product is beneficial.

Concentration Matters:
For alcohol to be effective, it must be used at concentrations above 75%. Lower concentrations do not effectively kill pathogens.
Sodium Hypochlorite solution (bleach) contains only around 5% of hypochlorous acid; therefore, a very high concentration of chlorine ~1000 to 2000 ppm must be used to achieve the same killing power.
Understanding pH + PPM
SpraySafe's pH level is between 5.0–6.5, making it a very weak acid. Effectively pH neutral, however the pH in the HOCI formula is maintained to maximize its antimicrobial properties.

SpraySafe Hypochlorous Acid Water: pH 5.0–6.5
Skin: pH 5.2–5.7
NZ Drinking Water Standard: pH 7.0–8.5
Typical Swimming Pool pH: 7.2–7.8
There are three phases of chlorine solution that change according to pH level:
-
CI2 strong acidic solution - causing a pungent chlorine smell and rust
-
HOCL neutral solution - effective disinfectant
-
OCL alkaline - ineffective disinfectant requiring high concentrations to achieve the same killing power

PPM is just one piece of the puzzle in creating a safe, effective HOCl solution. In reality, it’s the interplay between PPM, pH, chlorine levels, and stability.

PPM stands for "Parts Per Million" and is a unit used to measure the concentration of a substance in a solution. In HOCl water, it quantifies the amount of chlorine-based active ingredients relative to the total volume. A low PPM value (10-30 ppm) can still be highly effective because HOCl's chemistry allows it to act as a powerful disinfectant at minimal concentrations. Spraysafe's PPM in HOCl water changes dependent on application and intended use.
Products with high PPM for the same use are often making up for the lack of stability in the solution. Stability degrades over time, the formula diminishes gradually with pH levels normalising as time passes. Temperatures above 25°C can accelerate the degradation process, impacting the effectiveness of the solution. Exposure to air and UV can also expedite the degradation of the formula, affecting its stability.
Hence the opaque bottles.
Sustainable Alternative
Naturally Safe: Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is harmless to humans, animals, and the environment in low concentrations—our bodies even produce it naturally. It plays a crucial role in the immune response by killing pathogens without harmful effects on human cells.
Degradation: Unlike many chemical disinfectants, hypochlorous acid breaks down into harmless substances, mainly salt and water, once it has performed its disinfecting function. This minimises the potential for environmental contamination.
Non-toxic: HOCl is classified as non-toxic, making it safer for both humans and animals. This is particularly important in settings like hospitals or food processing, where traditional chlorine compounds can be harmful to both health and the environment.
Reduced Chemical By-products: Traditional chlorine disinfectants can produce harmful by-products, including chlorinated compounds that can be toxic to aquatic life. HOCl does not generate these types of harmful residues.
Effective Against Pathogens: HOCl is effective in killing a broad spectrum of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, requiring lower concentrations than traditional disinfectants to achieve the same or better results.

How it eliminates germs?
Hypochlorous acid water is considered as nature’s germ killer. It has been used in the medical industry around the world for years as a disinfecting agent. Numerous studies support its effectivity as a wound cleanser and powerful skin treatment.
When released, the Hypochlorous acid water (HOCl) oxidises and quickly combines with the organic compounds it comes into contact with, such as bacteria, fungi and viruses, and has the ability to penetrate the cell membrane and destroy the nucleus and DNA inside.

Only recently has the technology been available to adequately control and stabilise the compound to prolong shelf life and allow it to be packaged and sold as a viable sanitising agent from a bottle
How it eliminates odour?
The key word here is 'eliminates'. A lot of products out there merely mask the odour, not eliminate it.
This is yet another way that SpraySafe delivers leaving the air fresh without any added fragrance. SpraySafe eliminates the smell completely, similar to how it breaks down germs and bacterial cell membrane, it destroys smell as if it were never there at all. You don't need much, just a few sprays on the couch where the pets have slept or on the rubbish bin or toilet when you are done and the odour is eliminated.

Of course, it's also a great way to remove smells from your hands like pet smells, fish, petrol and is great for removing cigarette odours from vehicles and clothes.

How do we know SpraySafe Kills bacteria?

SpraySafe undergoes testing in New Zealand to international laboratory standards. This ensures that the product meets high-quality benchmarks for safety and effectiveness.

The Protect product is approved by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MAF) for use in food preparation, indicating its reliability and safety for use in settings where hygiene is critical.

These claims are supported by laboratory testing and research, which demonstrate the effectiveness of hypochlorous acid in sanitising and disinfecting against a wide range of pathogens.
